Why does average view duration matter to a buyer?
This is the single most useful thing to understand before buying any video metric. YouTube ranks on average view duration, TikTok ranks on watch-through, and Reels distribution moves on average watch time. A flood of views that register for under a second raises the visible count and lowers the ranking input, so the purchase actively works against the outcome most buyers say they want. TikTok views are the cheapest unit anywhere in this market and are the clearest case of it (PanelCompare domain research, 2026-09-06).
The market prices duration explicitly where it can deliver it, which is the best evidence that the distinction is real. One provider’s USA high-retention YouTube views form a clean ladder by watch length, with identical structures sold for China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam, and search-sourced views sit far above all of them at $8.80 for 60 seconds and $12.10 for 120 seconds (PanelCompare domain research, 2026-09-06). Paying 7× the floor rate for duration is the only version of a view purchase that touches the ranking metric at all.
How does average view duration show up in a price list?
Duration is encoded in the service name rather than in a field — “[1-2 Min]”, “[HR]”, “[20-25 sec retention]” — and drives the price more than any quality adjective on the same row.
High retention is also the second meaning of HR on YouTube rows, distinct from its durability meaning on follower rows. On a view service it means watch percentage; on a follower service it means survival. Same two letters, different claim.
