PayPal’s own guidance is unambiguous and worth quoting to anyone who suggests it: your payment is not covered by Purchase Protection if it is a friends-and-family payment, and “if a seller is encouraging you to send a ‘Friends and Family’ payment when you’re buying a good or service, you should refuse” (PayPal help centre, verified 2026-09-11). The request itself is the signal, independent of whether the panel is honest.
It happens in this market for a structural reason rather than a malicious one. PayPal’s acceptable-use policy and chargeback exposure make this vertical a liability, so panels that lose PayPal as a gateway sometimes keep taking it informally through a personal address. Understand what that means: an informal PayPal payment leaves no merchant record, no dispute path and no gateway relationship to complain to — it is closer to sending cash than to paying a business.

It never appears as a listed method. It appears in a support chat or a Telegram message after the official gateway has failed, usually framed as a workaround or a way to avoid fees.
