Artificial streaming

Why does artificial streaming matter to a buyer?
Spotify defines an artificial stream as “a stream that doesn’t reflect genuine user listening intent, including any instance of attempting to manipulate streaming services like Spotify by using automated processes (like bots or scripts)”, and states three consequences plainly: those streams do not earn royalties, do not count toward public stream numbers or charts, and do not positively influence recommendation algorithms (artists.spotify.com, verified 2026-09-11). Severity escalates to removal of the song from playlists or from Spotify altogether.
The part that makes this different from every other platform is that the penalty travels through a commercial relationship you have with a third party. Spotify charges labels and distributors per track where flagrant artificial streaming is detected on their content, a policy it dates to 1 April 2024, and the distributor “may issue warnings, charge a penalty fee, suspend the user’s account, or remove the music from Spotify” (artists.spotify.com, verified 2026-09-11). An artist buying streams is exposing their distributor account, not only their play count.
How does artificial streaming show up in a price list?
The catalogue does not warn about any of it. Spotify is in fact one of the cheapest and largest categories on a panel — plays clear around $0.69 per thousand with a lifetime guarantee and drip-feed, monthly listeners around $0.99, track saves around $0.35 (PanelCompare domain research, 2026-09-06) — and the low price is exactly what makes the exposure asymmetric.
Source-targeted variants (algorithmic, radio, editorial, Discover Weekly, Release Radar) are sold as a differentiator at $0.60–$1.30. They are a claim about where a stream appears to originate, and nothing in the order or the response substantiates it.
Think this definition is wrong?
Terminology in this market is set by the panels that use it, and it moves. If a panel uses artificial streaming to mean something other than what is written here, send us the listing and we will either correct the definition or record the variant. The process is on the about page.
